Rebuilding Your Confidence & Body Image

Adjusting to an ostomy is as much a psychological process as it is a physical one. It is completely normal to feel insecure about your body, worry about stoma noise, or feel anxious about returning to work and intimacy.

Understanding Stoma Noise

Stomas make sound—they release gas just like you did before surgery, but without voluntary control. Noise is usually loudest in the first weeks and settles as your bowel heals. Wearing a snug shirt or pocket support muffles sound significantly.

Returning to Work & Hobbies

You can return to sports, swimming, and your career once your doctor clears you. Use support belts for physical labor or swimming to keep the pouch secure.

Intimacy and Relationships

Intimacy is still fully possible. Communicate openly with your partner. Using a pouch cover, mini-pouch, or wearing wrap-around underwear can make you feel much more comfortable.
